說明

This dataset presents fish observations made in a study to identify local user communities (LUCs) and indigenous knowledge (IK) about Ningu(Labeo victorianus)home ranges and engage LUCs in identification, characterization, and mapping of breeding and nursery for the species to guide its recovery in rivers Kagera and Sio, affluent rivers of Lake Victoria.

計畫資料

The Project “Bringing fishers at the centre: the value of local knowledge in the recovery of the Critically Endangered Labeo victorianus (Ningu)” is implemented in Uganda by the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). The project objectives are to identify local user communities (LUCs) and indigenous knowledge (IK) about Ningu home ranges and engage LUCs in identification, characterization, and mapping of breeding and nursery areas habitats of the species to guide its recovery in rivers Kagera and Sio. The rivers are affluent rivers of Lake Victoria.

經費來源 The project was funded by Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.
研究區域描述 The monitoring covered rivers Kagera and Sio, the two main affluent rivers of Lake Victoria. We carried out assessment, mapping, and characterization of Ningu (Labeo victorianus) from critical habitats such as river mouths, littoral zones and within the river reach.
研究設計描述 Sampling locations were selected from zones of the Open Lake, Inshore, River mouth, Midstream and Inshore areas of the Lake-River interface.

取樣方法

Fish sampling in rivers Sio and Kagera was done using an electrofisher (HALLTECH HT- 2000 Battery Backpack). Fishing was supplemented with experimental monofilament nets (0.5 to 2 inches) and multifilament gillnets of mesh sizes 1 to 8 inches. Before electrofishing, the electrofisher was set at 80Hz, 350V and 2kW of maximum power. The monofilament and multifilament nets were set in the evening and left to fish passively overnight. Upon retrieval, all the catch was identified to species level according to Greenwood (1966). The fish species were counted and weighed.

研究範圍 The datasets cover rivers Kagera and Sio, affluent rivers of Lake Victoria. The fishing expedition was conducted in April – May 2020.
品質控管 Appropriate fish identification guides were used. Species names were validated in FishBase (Froese & Pauly, 2021).

方法步驟描述:

  1. Taxonomic identification of the fish was made using according to Greenwood (1966).
