Descrição

This dataset presents fish occurrences from two small lakes (Bisina and Opeta) and two rivers (Manafwa and Namatala) in the Lake Kyoga system, Eastern Uganda.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Métodos de Amostragem

The fringes of lakes and rivers in the area are in most cases associated with dense vegetation, limiting access to sampling sites and operation of fishing gears. The sampling, therefore, considered easy to access sites. Several fishing methods (gillnets, electo-fishing, hooks, cast nets, and spearfishing)were used to maximize observations.

Área de Estudo The sampling covered two small lakes and two rivers in the Lake Kyoga basin, Eastern Uganda. Lakes Bisina and Opeta were sampled in March and June 2013. River Manafwa was sampled in February and June 2013. River Namatala was sampled in February, March and June 2013. The fishes were collected using gillnets set during the day, electo-fishing, hooks, cast nets and spear-fishing.
Controle de Qualidade The validity of scientific names was based on FishBase, and the Eschmeyer's catalogue of fishes (Froese & Pauly, 2019; Fricke et al. 2019).

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. Notes on some included species: The dataset contains species, previously not reported in the Lake kyoga system based on FishBase (Froese & Pauly, 2019. These include Haplochromis maxillaris, H. phytophagus, H. squamulatus, H. cryptodon, H. lividus, H. martini, H. parvidens, H. victoriae, H. michaeli, Enteromius kersternii, E. magdalenae, E. paludinosus, and E. radiatus. These observations were maintained in the dataset because they were identified by experts, and the distribution notes in FishBase may not be exhaustive, particularly for less sampled habitats such as the small lakes and rivers covered by the dataset.
